Chartwatch - January 9, 2009

Our weekly recap of veteran artists on the current music charts. Chart highlights:

  • There's not much in the way of new releases, but it was sure one crazy chart week. From the Christmas albums vacating the charts (almost) to major sales in both brick-and-mortar and on-line stores, there are some huge changes taking place.
  • Who would have thought that the veteran artist with the biggest hit albums (both current and catalog) in the U.S. right now would be ABBA. The release of the DVD of Mamma Mia! and the holiday gift season has pushed the soundtrack back up to number 12 and their Gold album returns to number one on the catalog chart.
  • After-season sales on a couple of holiday albums have placed them higher on the charts than at any time before Christmas. The Nat King Cole NBC album jumps from 164 to 44 on the regular album chart and number one on the jazz albums while Rick Springfield's holiday set comes out of nowhere to six on the catalog chart.
  • Things weren't so kind to others. AC/DC's Black Ice tumbled from 11 to 37 while Enya's pseudo-holiday album fell 14 to 48.
  • In the U.K., Michael Jackson's King of Pop anthology jumped back on the charts last week at 54 and makes the leap all the way up to 20 this week.
Previous week position noted in parenthesis.
